Sustainability at Bose

2020/07/20

Sustainability is a reflection of Bose’s Essence and Values, supporting our pursuit of excellence and our collective commitment to conduct business with integrity and treat others with respect. We aspire to infuse sustainability into our day-to-day work across the company, so that it shapes our thinking and the way we do business.

Our approach to sustainability

We aspire to infuse sustainability into our day to day work across the company, so that it shapes our thinking and the way we do business.

The Bose sustainability programme manages the social, environmental and economic responsibilities of our business. Our ambition is to adopt leading environmental and social management practices and embed a sustainability mindset comprehensively across the company. In the pursuit of this ambition, we have established a global multi-year sustainability strategy that delivers customer value by inspiring innovation in our products, engages our employees to help them reach their full potential and seeks to give back to our communities in meaningful ways.

Reports and Resources

The 2019 Sustainability Report shares our most impactful sustainability activities over the past two years. Visit the Reports and Resources page to access our current and past reports and other resources.

Supporting renewable energy

In 2018, a 1.7 MW solar array went online at our Framingham, Massachusetts headquarters. The system brings enough electricity onto the grid to power a substantial portion of our Framingham campus, which helps Massachusetts meet its renewable energy goals.

Employees

Our people are the heart and soul of our business, driving the innovation, creativity and excellence that have made Bose what it is today. By helping our people to live richer and more meaningful lives, we create a work environment that can attract and retain the best talent, which will perpetuate our business into the future.

Programs such as Wellbeing@Bose, Appreciate@Bose, and Health & Safety all enhance the work experience and wellbeing of our employees. We also have several important training programmes that support employee development, including the Bose Lean Enterprise training and the Global People Management Initiative, which we encourage all of our managers to complete.

Communities

We are dedicated to putting our passion, expertise and goodwill into action to support the places where we live and work, and the causes we believe in. Our employees give back to our communities through a variety of efforts including volunteering, charity campaigns and corporate giving. At a corporate level, we bring our innovative spirit and desire to advance the cause of research and progress through our education initiatives. Support for educational programmes in particular allows our people to share their expertise with aspiring engineers, broadening their own life and work experience through the mentoring process, while fostering the next generation of engineers who will carry the Bose legacy into the future.

Product sustainability

In today’s world, more and more of our business customers are seeking and expecting products that demonstrate strong sustainability performance. We want to meet and exceed their expectations by creating innovative products that have smaller environmental footprints and contribute to positive social outcomes.

By considering energy efficiency, durability and chemical composition, we are able to enhance the environmental attributes of our products. We look for ways to minimise our packaging and use environmentally preferable materials, and to bring to market innovations that tangibly improve people’s quality of life, as evidenced by our focus on wellness products.

Environmental initiatives

Bose recognises that our operations and products have an impact on the environment and we believe in a responsible approach to mitigating these impacts. We regularly identify and pursue opportunities to reduce energy and material use, and to limit carbon emissions and waste generation. We’ve seen a groundswell of engagement from employees, who have often stepped up and taken the lead in organising initiatives within their facilities across the globe. From large-scale energy efficiency projects at our manufacturing plant to employee-led efforts to phase out disposable cutlery in our cafeterias, we will continue to look for opportunities to reduce our environmental impacts.
