Five tips for choosing the most optimal earphones for sports

2023/04/13

…with two product tips in different price categories…

Are you one of those active people who run on outdoor treadmills when spring arrives? Or are you at the gym getting ready for the summer swimsuit season? In almost all individual sports, music helps to overcome exhaustion, to take a second breath and to achieve higher performance. To do this, you need to choose not only the playlist, but also the earphones correctly. Here are some specific tips for the right earphones for sports.

  Fit in the ears

If you feel that your earphones come loose while running and you have to put them back in your ears every minute, then no music can motivate you. The number one rule is therefore: the earphones must remain firmly in the ear even during exercise. For sports, small earphones with silicone tips are the most suitable. Look for ones that stick to the ears in an extended fashion. Some of them, like the Energy Earphones Sport 4 True Wireless, solve this by using a directional element around the ear, similar to the temples of glasses. Other types of earphones use "silicone tips" to literally screw into the earlobe. The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, for example, fall into this category.

  Quality sound = better motivation

Sound quality plays a key role in choosing earphones. Imagine the difference when you listen to your favorite song through a high-end speaker or an ordinary radio. In addition, the intensity of the experience of listening to music directly affects the motivational effect during sports. Unfortunately, the technical parameters do not say much about the accuracy of reproduction. Quality is, of course, a matter of personal priorities and needs, but in general you will enjoy the music the best if the reproduction of the entire frequency range is balanced and you hear everything that the creators put into the recording. It's good to reach for an already known brand, or what's best – to try the earphones themselves. Last but not least, we can compare the sound of different earphones based on price category.

Wireless models are more convenient, but they can drain

Wireless earphones clearly lead the popularity list today. There are two types available on the market: the "really wireless" type, and the type that connects the right and left sides with a short cable behind the neck. The choice is entirely up to you, however absolutely wireless models can be a more convenient solution in many cases. Did you use your earphones during the day and want to go for a run when you get home from work? In that case, the battery life and the possibility of fast charging are the real influencing factors. It is good if it can operate at maximum volume for at least 6 hours without charging, a good example of this is the previously mentioned Bose QC Earbuds II (even with the ANC system on).

  ANC yes or no?

ANC is used to actively reduce ambient noise. Thanks to this, it provides excellent listening conditions even on a busy street. It also helps to filter out unwanted sounds while concentrating on work in the office. In the event that you run outdoors, ANC can also cause "overhearing", that is, it also filters out the noise of a passing car or cyclist approaching. For outdoor sports, we therefore recommend earphones that allow you to perceive ambient noise at least to a certain extent. Such earphones can be those that have no ANC function at all, or those in which noise filtering can be controlled, turned off, or even better, those models that offer their wearers a transparent mode, that is, they allow external sounds to enter the ear temporarily (this is a useful feature in also in case you want to have a conversation without taking the earphones out of your ears).

  Focus on resilience

What is worth paying attention to is durability. You will sweat when you play sports, and when you run outside, it may rain. In such cases, even a drop of water must not touch the speakers or the electronics of the earphones. If this does happen, of course they will not be ruined immediately, but it will have a negative effect on them in the long run. Most earphones are also categorized by their water resistance. This is determined by its classification according to the so-called "IP" scale. After the letters "IP" there are two numbers - the first indicates the degree of protection against the penetration of solid particles (sand, dirt, fine dust), and the second indicates the resistance to water. Sometimes one of the numbers is replaced by the letter "X", which means that the product has not been tested in this category.

Here is a simplified explanation of water resistance:

IPX0: The product is not waterproof.
IPX1 - IPX4: The product is resistant to moisture, sweat or even splashing water (depending on the degree).
IPX5 - IPX6: The product is resistant to low or high pressure water jets. corresponding to "waterproof".
IPX7 - IPX8: The product can withstand temporary immersion in water, "waterproof".
IPX9: The product withstands high water pressure when submerged..
